I was in the Air Force during the Vietnam War. One person on base wanted to be discharged. He had a family and bought a house off base. His reason for a successful discharge was he “couldn’t live within his means and his $400 per month pay (1966) was insufficient to support his lifestyle. He was successfully discharged! At a radar site I was at a year later an Airman got discharged because he was a “sleepwalker.” I doubt if someone in the Army would have been successfully discharged under these circumstances.

What if a disgruntled, disillusioned sailor could finish his enlistment term in a Reserve component. For those who don’t know the Reserve or National Guard attend meetings for duty one weekend a month and are obligated to 14 or 15 days a year for Active Duty for training. At one time the total obligation was for six years. That way you could pursue a civilian career all year except for the two days a month and two weeks for training. Seems a better option than being treated like a criminal.
