My sister took the 11 plus and passed, but was denied a place in a grammar school in preference to one of the school governors daughters, who compared to my sisters intellectually, was pretty mediocre All of my siblings had above average I.Qs but were all denied the chance to get a grammar school placing because there were so few and of course, those with power, influence and money were able to grab those places for their own. I would like to see more grammar schools so that the working classes and impoverished have a chance to elevate themselves. Having experienced hard times, these people have more grit and stoicism than the privileged who lead soft lives, and could achieve much for themselves and for the country . Instead we have an avalanche of snowflakery coming from those who don't live in the real world of hardship and we're levelling down instead of reaching higher.

  3. @Sez BNot true, I was a swot who came from a very poor background, having two disabled parents ( mother through cancer, father 3rd degree burns from a fire at his place of work so not malingerers!) and constantly bullied for it by "posh" kids, who perhaps thought my aspirations to go to college and uni were some sort of "getting above my station" ! I never got to fulfill them because the 11plus was stopped before I got the chance to take it, but on a more positive note, in the 70s my mum who was in her 50s got a place in our local college as a mature English student and passed with flying colours. Poor or underprivileged does not always equate to unintelligent, and the country is elevated by such people whose characters have been honed by hardship in the real world, being lifted into positions of power and influence, unlike the priveledged snowflakes know nothing, except what they hear on twitter or TikTok pulling the strings to make sure those people " know their place" under the guise of virtue .
