Every country should be self reliant on every level, that way we can choose our friends with more discernment, e.g. because they hold the same values as us, as in any relationship, it is better to be wanted than needed. It's too easy to compromise our principles when people or countries have power over us, compliance is the price we pay for giving away our own power, hence why so many global governments have used the pandemic for their power grabs.
