I guess I never understood why the F-111 remained an 'F' aircraft. I guess the SAC bomber was relabeled the FB-111, but why did it never adopt something like A-111? Was the 'F' just a hangers-on from the TFX program and the Navy proposal? Because of the tragedy, my mind always drifts towad the TSR.2 when the F-111 was pitched to the RAF. I don't think anyone would have considered the TSR.2 a fighter :). But it was labeled as a 'Strike' aircraft, for sure - 'Strike' has a nicer ring to it, than the aforementioned 'Attack' moniker. Maybe the S-111? No, that's reserved for ASW, like the S-3 Viking. Nevermind, just leave it as the F-111. Carry on.

I'm a new IWM subscriber with a keen interest in aircraft, and quickly have come to consider the IWM as an authoritative and authentic source of historical knowledge. While all the curators and commentators are excellent, I look forward to listening to Emily Charles the most. I find her a very professional speaker with an approachable aspect that's very engaging, and I'm left with the impression she's quite concerned with historical accuracy and integrity, as is the IWM generally. I'm sure they exist, but I've yet to happen on an American channel similar. Nice work.
