  7.  @joelrodriguez9661 I’ll always hope the Cutlass’ airframe was too far ahead of the contemporary powerplant technology. I’ve loved it since I was a kid, just awestruck by its shape. If only it had the engines needed for it’s performance, there might have been more will to resolve its other solvable woes. Alas, only in my imagination…

  9. Sigh, it always makes me sad how Britain lost its premier place in the golden age of 1st and 2nd (and 3rd) gen jet aviation. A lot of brilliance wasted because of a shortsighted paper and a more shortsighted Labour government. And an economy having a rough time.   15. Somewhere in my boxes of pictures are a bunch from some air fest at KI Sawyer, late 70s, early 80s, taken with my trusty Kodak 110. It was a SAC base with 52s that also had an interceptor squadron of Darts. The F-106 was seared into my brain ever since, a very pretty plane.

I know I’ve seen the guy inside the NACA wind tunnel (06:55 and yes, I said it like NASA) on other docs featuring different aircraft, so I wonder if he worked there. If I could pick any job, I mean ANY, I’d go back in time and work for NACA, secure in the knowledge that aircraft technology was going to EXPLODE!!

  32. Surprised they didn’t. When Stalin said ‘exact copy,’ I bet the guy who skinned it was breaking rocks shortly thereafter. Not sure about the entire fleet, but story has it that on the first copy, sheet metal repairs present on the American ‘template’ were carried over to the Soviet copy #1.
