  1. What I don't understand is if they 'merge,' that doesn't seem all that catastrophic. Wha causes the massive explosion or a rebound? Or is it by virtue of these two small neutron stars coalescing into something with too much mass for the 'degenerate (?)' star to support, and it freaks out with some supernovae-ish neutrino burst?
