  2.  @IvorMektin1701 I think I recall a resto that rested on its extended landing gear such that the wheels (magnesium?) disintegrated, but the airframe remained pristine. I’m pretty sure this was a Great Lake find, but maybe it happened in Truk instead. Another aircraft I’m positive is from a lake is an airplane that was ditched overboard, but happened to ‘land’ on a different shipwreck! It’s gonna be fun dusting off the books and making wreck plans.

  4. Why would Grumman believe that dropping in a J-79 would result in only the most modest of performance gain? That just doesn’t make sense, unless the first iterations of the engine were extremely derated or something. Oh, and great topic, Mr. Nash, as always. Nice work.

  7. 6:45 It’s always hard for me to wrap my head around how young these boys who flew and fought were. Just kids! I take a lot for granted, especially my freedom, that these youngsters sacrificed for.

  8. I’d propose the name ‘Drumstick.’ Looking at the four attach bolts at 3:07, it reminded me of a couple T-28 builds I’ve worked on. Envisioning the stresses the bolts must have been on always gave me a chill.

  16. Are you picturing a downwardly aimed cannon that could swivel around? Like the one in the B-57G that Ed did a video on? I've often thought of modernizing a WWII aircraft like you described, although I'd prolly pick the P-61 - even if it would be terrible, I'd still pick it just because I think it is a gorgeous killing machine. A B-25 would really be something with turboprops, updated machine guns and/or rotary cannons, some other type of cannon to replace the 75mm one, modern radar and avionics, Mavericks, Hellfires or JAGMs on the wing rocket pylons, and 3,000 lbs (likely more w the turboprops) of dumb, laser-guided, or JDAM bombs in the bomb bay. I can't believe how heavily armed the Mitchell could be, with that amazing 75mm ship killing cannon, up to 18(!) 50 cals, and the bomb load - yeah, the B-25 might do alright. :). Take a peek on Wikipedia at what the Embraer Tucano can do; seems like an updated B-25 would be at least as effective, likely more. Ha, this was a fun exercise - I think I'll upgrade my P-61 next!

  17. Would the YF-12s initial flight profile even work as an interceptor? I’ve no idea and had always pined for a fleet of these, but I never learned exactly how rapidlly they can make it to Mach3 or to altitude, given the engines are in turbojet mode at lower speeds. Maybe it’d be a phenomenal interceptor, but it would be interesting to learn the time-to-climb specs. Also, as MarkD asks, would they be capable of instantaneous availability? I mean, didn’t reconnaissance missions take about as much preparation as a space flight? And if it’s on patrol at low speeds, wasn’t that an inefficient envelope for the craft? Maybe that’d all been worked out, who knows. But can you imagine seeing a fleet of these guarding our gates? Heaven.

  20. Don’t think the Phoenix was intended as a fighter killer…although as a MiG-25 killer, the AIM-54 might have been a weapon of choice. It, and it’s forerunner, the AIM-47, were meant to be long range AAMs to intercept bombers and maybe cruise missiles, although in saying this, I have no idea how maneuverable either really was. Maybe a good BVR AAM, but less of a high g missile like the current Python, IRIS-T, or Meteor.

  21. And yeah, Ed, I’d watch your work on the F-108…multiple times! It would be something to see what you’d come up with in the way of pictures, documentation , manuals, etc. Like the Blackbird, my eyes can’t see enough ofmthe Rapier. And, btw, the Arrow and TSR2.

  31. Hey, can u research the OV-1 Mohawk? The Pucara reminded me of this hotrod. When I worked on warbirds in Kenosha, Wisconsin, some guy had/has a military museum just south of the state line and he had 5-8 Mohawks, one of which was often flown at Kenosha. The thing was a rocket, and next to the noisy warbirds in the area, the Mohawk was errily quiet with its turboprops. That thing juat just pulled back and shot away from the runway, I'd have liked to ride in it.

  32. Not sure about that. The MiG-25 is oft given to be the reason for the F-15’s existence. But maybe! After thinking on it, was there even an alternative design proposed by a different mfg to compete w the F-15 for the Air Force’s air superiority spec?

  38. That thing could out turn a Mustang B? How could that be even possible? Also, I must be having a hard time comprehending its size, because with the way the cowling tapered to the front, I assumed it used an R2600. I'm trying to wrap my head around this airplane having a CornCob in its nose, because if that cowl is wrapped around four rows of cylinders, it must be huge! Maybe if I saw it next to a SkyRaideror a Jug, that would help. Nice work. 8:45 This is such an iconic shot of the F-100; I love this picture.

  49. Close enough, especially for a Brit. :). Not like you guys don’t have names/words that I’ve wrecked. I’ll have to check my ‘William Herschel’ book on aircraft powerplants. I know he’s some Lycumming examples but I’m not recalling this one. I’ve worked on their 8-cyl 720 series but I guess I thought that was their largest. Guess not. The O-1230 is pretty impressive looking., as is the H type.
