  1. I did a very noticeable double take, my heart jumped out of my chest, and I held my breath when I saw the Hustler for the first time, parked at Pima. I don’t think I would have the same reaction had I run into Greta Garbo or Audrey Hepburn.

Granted, there’s not much in the way of documentation, but I’ve never come across the 108 was to use exotic metals for its skins and frame, thereby limiting it to Mach 2.3-2.5. But I guess it could have been intended to use the stainless steel honeycomb of its big brother.

  3. He mentioned it was asinine and useless BEFORE it flew, making it not much of a deterrent yet. Hard to deter unless an example is flying. Granted, it’s ’uselessness’ as it applied to deterrence was redeemed when in serial production and operation, but even then only in perception. Well, ok, not ONLY in perception, as it was a very public hot rod and record breaker, but don’t forget that LeMay hated it.

  6. Not really a nitpick from my point of view, since I thought it was the former too. I just figured it was the heat from the air molecules hitting the skin, but I never felt satisfied with this being the mechanism that could, for example, melt a streamlined inconel structure at high mach numbers - especially in high altitude, rarefied air. The compression rationale makes so much more sense, I’m embarrassed I didn’t think of it. But when things happen outside one’s realm of experience, and one isn’t taught…. Thnx, brother

  7. It’s thought the MiG-25 borrowed some elements of the North American A-5 Vigilante. I didn’t really buy that until I looked at the side planform, and I was like, “holy shit, lookit.”

  11. More accurately, it’s reliability and crash history made famous by trial by media and misrepresentation on accidents caused by pilot and maintenance error. After all was said and done it’s record on both was as good and mostly better than contemporary craft. I’m no DC-10 fanboy, opining the market failure of the L-1011, but slandering a design due to bad press, incorrect perceptions, and because it’s popular speaks poorly of the integrity and competence of the slanderer.

You’re proposing ecomentalists invest a trillion pick-your-denomination in tech and infrastructure to save a couple hours to cross the Atlantic. Your comment about noise indicates your about 19 - too young to remember how deafening the average turbojet was. The Europeans unlucky to be in the flight path of a Concorde didn’t miss it. Noise is terrible, especially when you’re forced to listen to the exhaust of the entitled who like to think for others their time is so much more precious.

  15. Nice work, it’s difficult to find photos of this should-have-been. I’d have loved to see a flight line with dozens of XB-70s on one side, and dozens more of the XF-108s on the other. Imagine a world with the XF-108, TSR.2, and the Arrow all in it. I wish we had more photos of the mockup, different angles, outside, in the workspace it was put together, and so on. I can’t recall which flight sim, but some admirer created a really nice model project of it. I also wish there was more documentation available, and that some engineers would have collaborated on a book about the design process. At least the Hughes radar and fire control made its way into the Tomcat, and the Falcons into the YF-12. So sad we didn’t at least get a prototype or two, I suppose North American had their hands full with their Valkyries. Great work, this is definitely going into my ‘XF-108; Arrow; TSR.2’ folder for future viewing! Thank you!   36. Concoing’s good, I was trying to think of a way to merge the two. All of Russia’s designs are similar to other nation’s, and not because form follows follows function. More like Tupolev follows blueprints. For example, it wasn’t functional coincidence the Tu-4 could be mistaken for a B-29 - even down to some sheet metal patch repairs.

The TSR.2’s design requirements were even announced until 1956. And the Grumman Tomcat? Huh? Maybe the A-5 Vigilante bears some family resemblance, since they’re both North American designs. I don’t know about the reach to government corruption, though.
