  1. I did a very noticeable double take, my heart jumped out of my chest, and I held my breath when I saw the Hustler for the first time, parked at Pima. I don’t think I would have the same reaction had I run into Greta Garbo or Audrey Hepburn.

  2. He mentioned it was asinine and useless BEFORE it flew, making it not much of a deterrent yet. Hard to deter unless an example is flying. Granted, it’s ’uselessness’ as it applied to deterrence was redeemed when in serial production and operation, but even then only in perception. Well, ok, not ONLY in perception, as it was a very public hot rod and record breaker, but don’t forget that LeMay hated it.

  3. Not really a nitpick from my point of view, since I thought it was the former too. I just figured it was the heat from the air molecules hitting the skin, but I never felt satisfied with this being the mechanism that could, for example, melt a streamlined inconel structure at high mach numbers - especially in high altitude, rarefied air. The compression rationale makes so much more sense, I’m embarrassed I didn’t think of it. But when things happen outside one’s realm of experience, and one isn’t taught…. Thnx, brother

  4. It articulates about halfway up the strut. As the upper strut retracts aft, the lower strut ‘breaks’ forward, and this joint misses the pod.
