  3. ​ @yourgod010101  That's all relative. Obviously the laws vary by country but there's absolutely cases to be made in a lot of places for indefinite resettlement as refugees. My great-grandfather fled conscription into the Imperial Russian Army by going to the US and he certainly never went back. Likewise there are a lot of Russian Jews fleeing to Israel right now (maybe most at this point?) due to the war with no plans to ever return. The trouble is making a distinction between actual dissidents and apolitical draft dodgers, but there's plenty of legal precedent for that.

  5. My great-grandfather moved to the US in 1911 when he was drafted to serve in the Russian Army. Unfortunately, Jewish man whose number came up after emigrating, even if years or even decades had passed, was considered an illegal draft-dodger, leaving his father with an enormous fine.

  6. It wasn't really like that. There was definitely a more serious/somber vibe and more of a spotlight on family members of students who were serving, but no rallies or anything. Honestly the most nationalistic it ever got for me in school was 2nd grade (1997-98) where our teacher had us sing a different patriotic song from a Golden Age musical each day. And in 1st grade when we were required to do the Macarena every morning.
