It's necessary to have a common system of dating in order to facilitate commerce and knowledge across a globalized society, and the Catholic Church just happened to be the first ones to develop a calendar that matched up with the Earth's orbit. In Israel, we use the Gregorian calendar for business, news, official records, and common speech, and the Hebrew calendar to place all state holidays except V-E day. It's worked out fine.

  4. Ethiopia, which is Christian, mind you, still uses a calendar that's about 8 years behind the rest of the world and places the New Year in October. It's about to be 2010 there.
