  1. My hometown of Pasadena, CA was founded as a tuberculosis colony, though it never actually served as one. My great-grandfather's death from complications of tuberculosis in 1937 is what led my grandfather to move from Chicago to Los Angeles, where he met my grandmother. My existence is the result of tuberculosis.

  4. My hypothesis: I suspect that the system of government may play a role here. You were onto something saying that certain countries are more well-positioned to elevate the very best athlete in each field, but they aren't less affluent countries; they're dictatorships. Countries that are more authoritarian prioritize athletic competitions that showcase what we may loosely call objective metrics of strength, speed, etc., at the expense of competitions that value creative and innovative team strategies. Therefore, I think we need to compare on two axes: medal distribution in democratic vs. authoritarian counrries and in team vs. individual sports.

You wouldn't have heard about this in the mainstream, Hank, but the switch to permanent DST is actually problematic for observant Jews, since men are required to pray at sunrise, and if we're observing DST in the winter months, this could wreak havoc with commute and work schedules. It's not the biggest thing in the world, but I thought it was interesting.

  23. In Israel, the vaccination rate has slowed to a crawl because a way larger share of our population is children, and it's widely not believed that they can get sick. It's immensely frustrating. The curve of growth started leveling off in February.
