  1. My hypothesis: I suspect that the system of government may play a role here. You were onto something saying that certain countries are more well-positioned to elevate the very best athlete in each field, but they aren't less affluent countries; they're dictatorships. Countries that are more authoritarian prioritize athletic competitions that showcase what we may loosely call objective metrics of strength, speed, etc., at the expense of competitions that value creative and innovative team strategies. Therefore, I think we need to compare on two axes: medal distribution in democratic vs. authoritarian counrries and in team vs. individual sports.
