Honestly, I've been consistently impressed by the way historical YouTube channels have made economic history interesting– Extra History's series on the South Sea Bubble and the evolution of paper money are particularly outstanding. And of course anytime someone decides to make a video about the Opium Wars.

Anyone interested in this stuff on the ground level should check out “One Summer: 1927” by Bill Bryson.

@1:51 Hanukkah is spelled backwards.

Exactly. This is why the border was drawn so funny– Britain needed Jordan to build a pipeline between Kirkuk and Haifa, which ultimately made the latter one of the most important cities in the Empire during WWII (and boring as hell today).

Jan Sanono Yes. But I’m guessing TimeGhost uses Adobe Illustrator, which currently doesn’t understand that. It’s a real pain in the ass (voice of experience).

This is why it's so important to talk to your Old Glory representative about getting coverage for robot attacks.

Then ESPN started airing poker tournaments to fill the dead air and everyone went crazy for it.

2:50 Don't forget the Dodecanese!

War never changes.

The Maccabean Revolt resulted in a military alliance between Judea and Rome. And the temple was only looted because Rome had pressured the Seleucids not to invade Egypt, leaving the army broke.

Interesting fact (I won’t say “fun”). Nazi Germany’s Jewish “grandparent” rule is why anyone with a Jewish grandparent is eligible to become an Israeli citizen today. It is actually contradictory to Jewish religious law and is causing a huge political crisis between the religious minority and the secular majority here today.

Steve Kaczynski The British issued a moratorium on refugees to Palestine not long after this as well. The Yishuv Government then adopted a policy of defying the ban and sneaking in while collaborating with Britain in the fight against Germany. But the Revisionists refused and kept targeting the British.

Tel Aviv has a public square named after Masaryk, seemingly just because he visited once. I now understand why.

It would be poetic if that’s the Kadesh they meant to go for. But it might be a reference to the ancient Judean village whose site today straddles the border between Israel and Egypt, today known as Kadesh Barnea.

Interestingly, Israel's strengthened military position after the crisis really began to undermine Ben-Gurion in Israeli politics. He could have remained Prime Minister forever owing to his position as the founder of the country, but his own political allies became much more frustrated with his continued militaristic posturing, as they (rightly) felt it was getting in the way of domestic priorities. This eventually led to his ouster in 1963.

Fun fact: the first paratrooper drop was planned for the Western Front in February 1919, only for the war to end too early.

There would have been a referendum for Kurdish independence in the north, but it was pre-empted by Ataturk's uprising. Ditto Wilsonian Armenia.

She would have liked Chumbawamba. And disliked all the anarchists who hated them for having fun.

The menorah is the seven-branched one from the temple. In Hebrew, a menorah is any device used for lighting. So a hanukkiah is a menorah, but not the menorah.

Rome > Seleucia. Hell, Parthia > Seleucia by this point.

Someone once claimed this to me in Israel of all places in an attempt to discredit the kibbutz movement ("my aunt was as left-wing as you could get without being a Nazi). Maddening.

Kinda like the British Twenty Committee. XX = Double-Cross

There’s a really bad movie about this from 2001 called The Affair of the Necklace about this, starring Hillary Swank and a bunch of other famous people. It made less than half a million dollars and is an utter mangling of both history and cinema. Please do not watch it.

Kasurgis it was already named for him before World War II.

Kasurgis I never said otherwise.

Lindbergh wasn't technically the first to cross the Atlantic– the first crossing was from Newfoundland to Ireland. But New York to Paris was about twice the distance.

(Shameless plug for my YouTube series on Jewish ancient history that is admittedly heavily biased toward the Hasmonean Period)

The Temple wasn’t looted because of religious differences. Rather, the Seleucid Army was broke due to having been forced by Rome to withdraw from a planned invasion of Egypt which was to be financed through plunder after the fact. The Jewish Temple meanwhile had a full treasury due to being near the end of the seven-year financial cycle known as Shmita, making it an easy target. If you’re interested in this stuff, check out my channel.
