  1. I lived most of my life in the US, and the idea of there being available parking anywhere baffles me. Living in Los Angeles I often had to park half a mile from my own house at night. Traffic was also so bad that public transport was usually faster (unless you were going a really long way), and I often had nightmares about forgetting where I parked.

  2. I'm American (born 1989) and grew up with the electric kettle, the coffee dripper, and the Meterstab. I have no connections to Germany except that my uncles served there in 1944-45 and 1968-70 respectively.

  3.  @uliwehner  Israelis also seem to think the whole US has Manhattan-quality public transport. It used to. Now most of it has none at all. I can get anywhere here without a car…unless it’s Saturday. The new fundamentalist government is going to crack down even harder on that now. So I’m moving back to Chicago.

I am an English native speaker and semi-fluent in Hebrew, but Yiddish has always been a totally foreign language to me, and what I understand of it is entirely the result of its relatedness to English. In fact, I'd say English has slightly more in common with Yiddish than it does with Standard German.
