  3.  @omegapc9520  The Scottish Highlander thing is kind of a myth. Most backcountry settlers came from Northern England and Northern Ireland and actually settled much closer to the coast than what we today think of as Appalachia. This, of course, was a time before canals or railroads, when anyplace ships couldn't get to from the sea was considered "roughing it." The issue of settlement in the west was less of settlers actually living there and more of real estate developers snatching up claims where they thought settlers would live in the future.

  5. Heads-up: there's quite a lot of doubt that any Khazars converted to Judaism. The origin of this belief is most likely just a Spanish polemic about Jewish history framed as a series of letters. If anyone in the Khazar power structure was Jewish, it was likely only the Khagan Bek, or the military commander; and they had been assimilated into neighboring Muslim Tatars by the year 1000. And they'd never reached Central Europe.

  10.  @CivilWarWeekByWeek  In addition, my party is the only party holding primaries for the leadership (last week) and the party list (tomorrow; whoever gets the most votes gets a higher spot, except for the leader and her personal faves. Everybody chooses five and I've gotten my five locked down). And we're choosing a new President in June. And the Palestinian Authority is holding elections as well.
