  1. Technically speaking, Britain did create an indigenous buffer state between the Appalachian Mountains and Ohio/Mississippi rivers. However, it only officially existed for 20 years.

  3.  @omegapc9520  The Scottish Highlander thing is kind of a myth. Most backcountry settlers came from Northern England and Northern Ireland and actually settled much closer to the coast than what we today think of as Appalachia. This, of course, was a time before canals or railroads, when anyplace ships couldn't get to from the sea was considered "roughing it." The issue of settlement in the west was less of settlers actually living there and more of real estate developers snatching up claims where they thought settlers would live in the future.
