I’m chiming in because I recently mentioned Ayn Rand in a video: she came of age in the early USSR and was kicked out of Leningrad university because her father had owned a small business before the revolution. He wasn’t some big-timer; such people didn’t exist in the Russian Empire outside of government-connected oligarchs. Her entire ideology is just a Soviet strawman of western decadence. Zero irony.

As physicist Boris Altshuler said, “in the Russian mind western democracy is synonymous with criminal anarchy.“ Rand’s ideal civilization, in practice, is 1990s Russia.

Back in the 1980s, some magazine or other did a profile on what life would be like in 2013, and indeed one of the predictions was that every house would have a cooking robot who was an annoying hillbilly and constantly sung old country songs. The writer of the article genuinely believed that this was a thing people would want. Then again, that was the height of the line dancing craze.
