  4. And before that it was WebKit (safari still is) which is opensource. I cant remember who again but either google or apple failed to upstream their changes to it for quite a while.

  7.  @MostachoIrregular  have you seen how cheap buying a domain and webspace is nowadays? EVERYONE can have their own space on the internet and it would cost only a few bucks. Also you don't have to go full blown VPS. You could also, if you want to own your space truly, get a raspberry pi as a webhost and use dyndns to route a domain to it.

  8. not really. there wasn't also no more pain than today. If you wanted strict HTML and CSS: develop for the Presto Engine (opera), if you wanted the most reach: Mozilla/Netscape, if you wanted to torture yourself: Internet Explorer... I really don't miss those IEHacks.
