The only reason for EU existance is to deal with the post WWII reality, where the only way a state can exist is when it is based on single group's nationalistic sentiments (the biggest victory of the mustache guy). EU is managing debt between those otherwise hostile towards one another groups, and it does it very well. Shengen is not about some hipie bs, and free movement is a privilage, not an inalienable right. Trust cannot be induced by force.
