in my town, back in Poland, there used to be several town squares, that was kept by the "communists" reserved for green areas. I remember that it was always a battle to keep them relatively clean, people destroyed benches and there was broken glass everywhere. About 15 years ago there was another silent battle, by the few who wanted those areas to be kept green. Now one is covered with red cobble stone and beer garden and on the other one they build a mall. there is no green space within 1-2 km.
