  1. Marriage was always a matter of political and economical domain, only relatively recently it became more idealistic ritual. Peasants didn't need to worry too much about division or "merge" of heritage, since they had no right to own any. Later in the cities you get influences of Romeo an Juliet stories....Love is a bourgeois construct. It doesn't work in every language the same way thou. For example in Poland word "family" is directly derived from "labor", giving birth. In English first thing you think about is mafia ;)
