  1. It's the same principle as cars. Something has to take the impact. Modern cars crunch into tissue paper in a crash while some old cars stayed mostly intact even at higher speeds, but if the car doesn't get destroyed, the force goes through your body instead. If you crash head first into a pole and the helmet breaks, that same force would've otherwise gone through you.
