To be fair it became clear that the Russian army would've been stopped dead in it's tracks if it tried even pre-NATO if they failed that hard at the start of the war in Ukraine, a flat country with a very very young military. Finland has been built to defend against Russia. But now there is extra security guarantee.

@thishandleistacken Yes, unfortunately. It's a trap especially for American leftists they can fall into where anything associated with the US is automatically bad. It leads to ignorance on further away issues, unfortunately.

Russia has no leg to stand on on calling our (Finland's) joining of NATO an "assault" on their security. Finland's government nor Finnish people wanted to join NATO, but Russia made it clear in 2022 that they had no issue launching a war against a large country they share a border with. Russia has previously disseminated disinformation about systematic mistreatment of Russian born people in Finland. We have the 2nd largest land border with Russia in Europe. They gave us a reason to join, and especially if we only have article 5 and no permanent NATO base, even less of a leg to stand on. That being said, I think in the past year it's been proven that if Russia wasn't able to best a young military in a flat country they couldn't stand a chance invading against a nation built to defend against Russia.
