  1. The desire of US NEOcons to maintain global hegemony has not diminshed. China is existential threat to US hegemony. But two other issues have crept up. One is Ukraine. Fox news commentator said that the US should say to Europe, Ukrain/Russia is your problem, you deal with it. But even more pressing is Iran. Iran has really no incentive to rejoin the JCPOA, even if it did, that's not enough to satisfy Israel. Israel will not let Iran get the bomb. ANd the US can't afford to let Iran get the bomb either. If it did, what about Ukrain or Taiwan? But will Iran give up? They didn't give up after losing 1/2 million in the Iran-Iraq war (where US helped Iraq). If there is an all out war with Iran much of ME Oil facilities will be destroyed, and Europe, India, Japan, and even China will be starved for energy. (although oil/gas from Russia will help china). And how Iran turns out will affect what happens in the Russia+China vs US competition.
