Both China and the US have a large inventory of armed drones. Much larger than Taiwan, who is wasting their defense dollars buying obsolete and expensive US weapons. The next war will see very heavy use of armed drones. In the not too distant future China will fly armed drones into Taiwan's ADIZ. US drones are designed to strike the Taliban. But drones to counter a near peer military force are certainly on the drawing boards if not in production on every side.

This is the similar to the "freedom of navigation" operations conducted by the US Navy. And yes both are saber rattling and provocative. Prior to the invasion of Iraq, we flew war planes close to Iraqi air space, closer than the Chinese do to Taiwan. And we conduct military exercises with S. Korea that the North says is a rehersal to an invasion. Well for N-S korea there's no invasion but definitely with Iraq the flights led to a full scale invasion. So yes Taiwan should be concerned. China might just do what the US has done many times in the past. And it's a psych war as well, Kim would protest the joint US-S. Korea military exercises. Did those protests stop the US from holding military exercises? Will Taiwan's protests stop China's actions? But will this lead to war? Not a chance. China has another 28 years before 2049, to grow stronger militarily relative to the US. But what if Taiwan fires an anti-aircraft missile at one of the Chinese planes? That would give an excuse for China to take out that anti-aircraft installation, whether a chinese plane were lost or not. But can Taiwan just sit back and ignore this, unfortunately it can't. The question is will the UK now sail the QE aircraft carrier between Taiwan and China? And will China then fly 100 planes over the UK carrier?
