  1. There are many factions in the US neocon community. The more hawkish ones do want a war with China now or in the near future. The reason is that if China's growth continues to outpace the US, fighting a war later favors China. Others feel that an economic war by decoupling is how to defeat china. Again doing this sooner rather than later gives a bigger chance of success. Thos who strive for a military confrontation think the risk of losing an economic conflict is too high. Why doubling the defense budget won't work has to do with the state of the US economy. We're entering an era of high inflation. 40 years ago a normal interest rate for US bonds was 5%. Today inflation is 8% and going higher. If the interest for US treasuries went to 5% our interest payments would be 1.2 trilloin/yr higher >20% of the federal budget. As inflation picks up even more because of the Russia sanctions, Countries will move out of the dollar. This has already started.

  2. Don't underestimate the power of western propaganda. Ukraine is the sacrificial lamb to allow maximum sanctions on Russia. But Ukrainian soldiers are fighting and dying to preserve America's place as the world hegemon but they think they are fighting for their freedom.

  3. It isn't that the US doesn't appreciate that beating the war drums re-inforces the hawks in China, the neocons in the US don't care. The neocons are afraid that China's economy will grow faster and they feel that it's most important to preserve the role of the US as the global hegemon. If you eventually have to fight a war, it's better to fight it when you have a bigger economy and a bigger military. 20 yrs from now is not a good time. Cyrus showed a poll of Taiwanese public opinion. Vast majority do not want to declare independence now. But US propaganda will try to shift that opinion. And US propaganda has been effective in the past. Ukraine is being destroyed, some say sacrificed so that the US can impose crippling sanctions on Russia. If the economic war is not successful the neocons will shift to a direct military confrontation between Russia and the US. A similar strategy will apply to China. One weak link in the chain of the neocon throught is the state of high inflation and high govt debt. In the 1980's US raised interest rates to over 15% to control inflation. That's no longer possible with a 30 trilllion debt. Even 5% interest on 30 trillion of debt is 1.5 trillion/yr in interest payments, almost double the US defense budget.
