It's not jealousy. It's not about democracy. The US supports Saudi Arabia, and supported the Shah of Iran, not to mention virtually every country in S. America has at one time had a US appointed dictator, that abused its population, with death squads. China might upset the status of the US as he world hegemon some decades in the future. The "elite" in the US has benefited greatly by being the world hegemon since WW2. No economic system is perfect but American capitalism has many major flaws. It incentivizes CEOs to borrow $$ from the Fed to buy back stock. This improves stock prices which increase the CEO's bonus. But it does not create wealth, by inventing in new factories or investing in R/D, it does depletes capital so that when there's a shock like COVID multiple huge corporations go bankrupt. And American capitalism has created by far the largest gap between the upper 0.01% and the lower 50% in wealth of any country in the world. But democracy is a powerful force, there may be external influence in Hong Kong, but there was Tiananmen 30yrs ago? China would be better if it had democracy. It will never happen if the country is threatened from the outside. A democratic china would overtake the US faster and force a major change in american capitalism, to reduce wealth inequality, to plan for insertion of technology that both destroys and creates huge number of jobs. To those who want to preserve US hegemony, a democratic china is a bigger threat than the CCP.
