@peknive8331 so wait. youre saying the japanese were so afraid of the soviets (who had very little in the way of amphibious operation infrastructure) invading that they surrendered ie doing what they were trying to force america (who had the premier amphibious opperations in the world) to in hopes of forcing a negotiated peace in japans favor? really? that makes no sense. and as for saving lives, the us military (who were in a far better position to judge the possible expenditure of lives then you are) ordered so many purple hearts in expectation of the casualties of the invasion of japan that they were still issuing some DURING DESERT STORM 45+ YEARS LATER!!!

bs. japan was intending to force the americans (who had the premier amphibious operations in the world) to invade to force a negotiated peace. youre trying to say the japanese were more frightened of the russians (who had very little in the way of amphibious operations infrastructure) DOING THE SAME THING THEY WERE TRYING TO FORCE THE AMERICANS TO DO????? REALLY?

a few things id add. even after the emperor had made the decision to "endure the unendurable" a group of important colonels and majors (the generals couldnt publically oppose the will of the emperor) and after BOTH ATOMIC BOMBS HAD ALREADY BEEN DROPPED, attempted a coup by trying to interecpt the emperors surrender speech with the intention of continuing the war (google the "colonels coup")!!!! so many purple heart medals were ordered in expectations of the casualties of operation downfall (the invasion of japan) that they were still being awarded during desert storm in 1991. i get so sick and tired of this particular debate. with it costing 2 billion 1940s dollars and countless resources and man hours and the delivery system (the b-29 bomber) costing 3 billion 1940s dollars (thats right, it cost more than the a bombs) and similar resources and man hours there was zero chance, ZERO CHANCE of the abombs not being used. and can you imagine the public outcry when it was found out that there existed a potentially war winning weapon that couldve save millions of sons, husbands, and fathers lives and that it wasnt used for some dubious moral high ground?
