  4. Society of Mind by ai pioneer Marvin Minsky posits consciousness is constructed by numerous pattern recognition 'actors' in the brain coming together and fighting over dominance. Hallucinogenics sounds like giving some of the actors way more prominence or power than they would normally have. Visual hallucinations sound like an AI weighting matrix that was carefully 'trained' or relaxed on an image but then having someone go into the matrix and arbitrarily changing some of the values. A bunch of mathy stuff. Your brain is heavily wired for pareidolia, :-/, and when it detects that pattern, it fires a neuron. What if that neuron started firing without the pattern being detected? Other parts of the brain would kick in to make sense of the situation... hilarity would ensue
