Beats are good for winter. What you need most from a garden is calories (2,000/day) ...and there aren't many in tomatoes.

@naekki18schlumpf Of course you need nutrients, but this is on top of calories. You can survive an entire year on nothing but wheat or potatoes and grow other things in the spare time, not so much the other way around. And yes, bugs can do damage and very fast. I've had a majority of gardens wiped out in two hours. It's important not only to practice growing, but trying to live of of only what you've grown

@Shed Life Aphids killed a dill plant I had once between 6am and 9am...and tomato worms will deleaf an entire plant in an afternoon if you are not constantly watching. Chickens won't even touch those things if you try to feed one to them. Chickens are also a good destroyer of crops...and dogs. My dog loves peppers.

@IchNachtLiebe Solar is much better.

@IchNachtLiebe Yeast is everywhere. Just wet some flour and leave it out in the open and you'll catch a lot. Be very clean or it will mold first.

It's more or less too late fir most things in most areas I'd think. It takes 3-4 moths for most harvests.

@davidbroadbent1878 Of course. I'm not disparaging people, but warning if they think they can live off of a garden if they have to. A lot of people think they can plant some tomatoes and cucumbers and they'll be fine. I know people with dachas and are life long experienced gardeners who nearly starvd to death.
2
@naekki18schlumpf Yup. People need to be realistic as to what they can be expected do. I remember talking with people years ago who were expecting to survive a disaster with a balcony garden. Mosrt gardens are for variety, not really surviving.

You need calories, not nutrients. Sprouts have about thesame calories and nutrients as the seeds

Veggies won't last you very long. You need about 400g of dried grain per day to survive, or 8kg of vegetables.
1
@incelproud2670 Nope. ~400g of grains/potatoes/rice/corn or beans is equal to 8kg tomato, celerey, letuce, cucumber, etc. I calculated what it requires to stay alive for a year (@2000cal/day): 465 lbs pinto beans 442 lbs rice 480 lbs wheat 418 lbs corn
1
@incelproud2670 Yes, this is what I am saying. There are 2000kcals in 522g of dried potato. It takes roughly 4-500g of dried carbohydrates to equal 2,000kcal, regardless of the food, except oil.
1
@incelproud2670 haha. me too
1
@Shed Life Yup. 2,000/day is a good starting number for most calculations. I remember reading that after WW2, germans got about 1,000kc/day. You won't do well on that amount but it's probably enough to keep you alive until you can do better, hopefully with a growing season.
1
@Shed Life According to random internet site, "It takes a deficit of 1,000 calories per day to produce 2 lbs. of weight loss per week. "
1
@Shed Life Problem is, anything this catostrophic may last months to indefinitely. I think planning for a 'bug out' is a little pointless.
1
Almost no one can grow enough of their own food to make any difference. Do the math.
1
foraging long term is not realistic
1
One year of food per person: 465 lbs pinto beans 442 lbs rice 480 lbs wheat 418 lbs corn
1
@IchNachtLiebe It's not about being efficient...you can extract almost no useable energy from the wind, especially at smaller scales unless you live in a very windy area
1
@benjaminsagau Cinilization is over with an emp. I should invest in a bicycle. :((
1
@benjaminsagau Except in 1800's, it was just another day, not people standing around asking when the sarbucks is going to open because they can't brain without their almond latte.
