Demonizing a group of people turned out to be a nogo for most of the world, so they needed a new target. Everybody hates the weather. It is easy to play with statistics, Lorenz was a founder of many fields and atmospheric simulations is the #1 consummer of super computers so a lot of money. I have a friend who completely believes the weather is changing from when they were a kid. We got into an argument, then pulled up historical weather and they were 'mis-remembering' temperatures by 15°F! Somewhat related, the local tv weather reports use language like "almost set a new high" instead of "we mached the average for today" and will never report as "below average".
