I worked for a semiconductor manufacturer in the 90's. One day the president of the company wrote a letter to all of the employees urging them to write letters to congress to open up trade with china. I remember one guy down the hall did and got and posted the thank you reply letter he got from Clinton on his office door. Less than a year later he was laid off. I don't think the company exists anymore. Glad I saw the writing on the wall.

Jiminy Cricket There is no skill in running a semiconductor plant other than the few people in charge telling workers to wear a mask and don't drop the shiny plates.

@rickciardella And the government. People at my fab were encouraged by the president to lobby congress to open up trade with these countries. The US-China Relations act of 2000 is an Act of the United States Congress that granted China permanent normal trade relations (NTR) status (previously called most favoured nation (MFN)) when China becomes a full member of the World Trade Organization (WTO), ending annual review and approval of NTR.

Jiminy Cricket I was an engineer at a ISO 7 manufacturer. Half my friends are engineers or engineering managers. I knew people who designed cleanroom, but wasn't my thing, I did mpu design. Haven't worked there in a long time, but back then it was largely automated and workers would just monitor he process and keep the wafers moving. The real skill, or almost black magic as I was told, was tuning the line to get the yield up. I guess at the beginning of a new product line, you might only get 2-3 viable processors on a single wafer of dozens and he rest were scrapped. After you maximize yield lock everything down and don't touch any buttons.

@whompbiscuits8930 That's because that is what he customer wants (despite what they say).

We had the infrastructure but sent it away so that it could be used by people making $2/hour. If there was motivation to bring it back, who's going to be able to pay someone $70/hr to operate it and why wouldn't people buy the imported parts instead built with copied machinery and processes? We sold our inheritance for magic beans and now we want a refund?
