In 2021 Goldman Sachs reported that some 13% of U.S.-listed companies “could be considered” zombies, which it called “firms that haven’t produced enough profit to service their debts.” All these megastores opened up with free money, consolidated and put the smaller businesses out o business. Now with the end of free money, you don't have to worry about shutting down a bunch of smaller businesses that may have survived with the owner scraping by by living in the back room. Taking out Home Depot much easier than taking out thousands of independent Ace Hardwares.
