I think physics and math are the only things worth going to college for for most people.

@HontasFarmer80 I don't know. I went into engineering after physics and while I've never used anything from thermo directly, it was one of the best classes to learn how to think about real world problems and 'debunk' crackpot world changing inventions

@christianlibertarian5488 There is very little that you cannot do with a physics degree

I have an engineering degree. While I'm very glad that I know the things I learned for it, I have really only had to use any of that knowledge a handful of times. Probably well over 95% of the skills that I've ever used in a professional setting were self taught or learned on the job. I've worked with a number of people without degrees that are equally as competent as anyone with a degree. This is especially true if you work with teams of people with different experience and one person doesn't have to know everything.

@TheZod00 I knew people who went into particle physics but who dropped out after scsc was cancelled and went to become quants on wall street and retired very young. I read something once that this was part of why 2008 happened 🤔

In my senior year of high school, we had a presentation by an engineer who said that he had minored in English and it was one of the best decisions he had made because communication is so important. I don't know about that as everyone that I've ever worked with had good comm skills, but I can definitely see it as a plus.

@TimEvans64 I had a friend who was a director at NASA. He told me once that they had done a study to find out characteristics of who made the best engineers and it was people who grew up on farms. Presumably because they had re-life problem solving experience from a young age.

@ZESAUCEBOSS That sounds pretty normal, especially during crunch time. As far as passion killing - I was told this, literally, verbatim, on the first day in engineering school.

@yanmew Most of what I've done with my engineering degree, I could have done with my high school degree

@markzuckergecko621 🤣 I've been milking it hard for a long time. But as a co-worker once put it... I thought it would be so great to work on the space shuttle, but as it turns out, it's just another engineering job

@KameradVonTurnip “Muad'Dib learned rapidly because his first training was in how to learn. And the first lesson of all was the basic trust that he could learn. It's shocking to find how many people do not believe they can learn, and how many more believe learning to be difficult. Muad'Dib knew that every experience carries its lesson.” ― Frank Herbert, Dune
