If you can limit yourself as to when you do and don't use electricity, this can have a big impact on your system. I have cheap lead acid batteries and do not run anything high powered at night. As such, my night time, hence storage requirements are very low. I have 4 t105, =~1kwh storage. The only thing that I have to run at night are lights, a refrigerator, laptop, house water pump, .intermittent microwave and stereo. Daytime is the same + washing machine, dishwasher, AC, evap cooler. AC uses so much energy that if I just designed around that one requirement + 24hr refrigerator, I pretty much got everything else for free. It all depends on your personal requirements and living conditions. I never need ac at night and have the freedom to never having to run dishwasher or washing machine at night. That's a big savings on batteries. It takes ~2hr to recharge my batteries (1kwh usage) with 2.4kw of panels. Maybe twice as long if I'm running the AC and doing laundry. I don't have anything else to run if I did have a larger system, i don't have anything to use the energy and it would be wasted capability. I do have the capability of running anything just like a residential grid connected house. 120v, 30A service but don't own anything that uses that much capability.
