  2. More like designed not to last. You can reliably calculate a MTBF for every part and from there, with a high degree of confidence, estimate how long something will last. That's how NASA can guarantee that a Mars rover will last its 120 mission length. If a system has 10,000 parts and each part was designed to last 120, it would fail before it was launched. In order to get up to 120 days, a lot of math is used and it usually turns out that a part's lifespan has to be in the thousands of days. When you have the model built, type in a price point and lifespan desired and it will tell you how long each part has to last.
