The 'Black Cats', as we knew them in Australia, carried out long range reconnaissance and anti-submarine patrols that would have been near to impossible without them. Maritime patrol might seem like boring or mundane work but it was absolutely essential, if unspectacular. With the Australian coastline being so long and the operational areas over the Pacific and even the Coral Sea being so vast, the Catalina's range was a huge asset. Even its low speed was something of an advantage, even if it made them very vulnerable. That's why the Catalina was so highly regarded here.
