What he does not tell you is that the early part of the raid was escorted by the RAF. RAF Mustangs also escorted them home.

‘Razorback’ refers exclusively to the P-47 because of the sharp spine behind the cockpit. It’s not some cool term the cool kids are using to describe any aircraft without a bubble canopy. There were no razorback Bf-109s. There were no razorback Spitfires either. And of course, there were no razorback P-51s either.

@hckyplyr9285 That almost certainly comes down to which model they got the most kills in.

The ‘long range fighter aircraft’ meant P-51 Mustangs. The majority of P-47s could not get beyond the Dutch border. A small number were fitted with under wing tanks but even then, could not get to Magdeburg. Only the P-51 could get to Berlin and they were all P-51B models. The -D wasn’t available until April.

Levegh’s real name was Velghe. He changed it so his family wouldn’t know he was racing. He is buried in the family plot at Pere Lachaise in Paris.

I think you’ll find that Brough’s name is pronounced ‘Bruff’, rather than ‘Bro’. English… unpredictable as ever.

For anyone who is serious about understanding this raid, ’Target Berlin: Mission 250, March 6, 1944’, by Jeff Ethell and Dr Alfred Price gives a far more dispassionate and highly detailed description of this raid, which blows away a lot of the myths of the Eighth Air Force’s campaign against Germany. It is an absolute must-read.
