@AdamSydney-nc6ju Australia has not acted in the best interests of Australians in the past. Why do you think this will change and how? Further to that, there’s no reason to suppose that any differences between Australia and China could never be reconciled. What if our interests and China’s interests align? They’ve bought our iron ore for decades and paid us well for it. The only problem was that too much of it ended up in Gina’s bank account.

@AlfredLoomis-r2z I have been reading military and political history for more than 50 years and I can’t envision a single reason why you could be right. These kinds of tropes are the product of American thinking and it doesn’t apply here. You want to see an example of a country that’s going it alone and doing it well? Look at New Zealand. Tell me why we couldn’t do the same thing. I’m not proposing to get rid of the ADF but neither am I proposing to keep it out of a matter of military achievement and tradition either. I just think we need to recognise that we are not regional head kicker and that’s not in our best interests. We spend $60 billion a year on defence and $1.8 on diplomacy. Think about that for a second.

@Davidcallard What did you expect? First of all, we are conducting exercises in the name of the United States, 30 nm off the coast of mainland China. Secondly, we are the smallest country involved in that operation. Who do you think China — or indeed, anyone on their position — is going to put the squeeze on first? Us or the United States? If Keating were still in charge, it would never have come to that.
