Why, why, why do people obsess about binaries? He didn’t say it. Furthermore, training and experience is everything in air combat. Sure it helps to have good equipment and good leadership (which Japan lacked) but this is not a furphy. The Japanese learnt a lot from their war in China, just as the Germans learnt from Spain.
