Old Media vs New Media here is based on some false assumptions. The biggest difference between old and new media is accountability. Very few new media channels have ever been brought to account for things like libel or sub-judice contempt of court, whereas it is a threat which the old media has to live with constantly. This has been going on for a very long time (15+ years) without any action. Governments around the world could actually do something about it by prosecuting individuals who flout the law, either through ignorance or arrogance, but as yet, there have been very few cases. It seems you can post whatever you like on Facebook or Twitter and get away with it because it is not hosted in the same jurisdiction. Old media faces this every day. Anyone who breeches a court suppression order can find themselves in all sorts of trouble with the law. Anyone who refuses to identify sources under oath can find themselves in contempt of court and even go to jail. Anyone who broadcasts slanderous allegations - even made by a third party - against another party can be sued for defamation. New media seem completely immune to this and there's little political will to change it.
