It should also be remembered that the Luftwaffe never really made up its material losses in Poland and France before attacking Britain. The German production system was not geared up for a long war - as said in this video - so they were unprepared to increase production quotas in response. The British, on the other hand, were just getting into their stride by the time the Battle of Britain ended. When Hitler elected to invade the Soviet Union, they were still significantly short. Another thing they never did was to develop a successful strategic bomber. Some of this came from the fact that Germany was not industrialised in the same way that Britain and particularly the United States were. Their factories were geared for smaller production runs and their designs were reliant on a higher level of worker input than the Allied countries (even including the Soviet Union). This was a lesson hard learnt by the British early on, especially with production of the Merlin engine which in its early form, was not designed for mass production. Fortunately for them, they addressed this in time.
