  1. It's pretty amazing what the Vietnamese pilots achieved, especially considering the very brief training period they had - months rather than years - what opposition they were up against and the conditions under which they were operating.

  2. I’m not sure I’d call it a failed project. It’s not like it failed to meet expectations but rather that 5hose expectations changed almost constantly. The Chinese were still evolving in their priorities and requirements.

  3. These guys weren’t exactly peasants. They were chosen in much the same way as Western pilots. I suppose there were some who were offspring of party officials but I haven’t heard of any. There were certainly some in the South. You should read Istvan Toperczer’s books in MiG pilots in the Vietnam War, available as part of the Osprey series. They’re not expensive and they are probably the best resource generally available. He’s done a fantastic job and in sure this doco would have made good use of the,.
