The advantage of the A29 are the ability to operate in austere environments, high cycle rate (it can do a couple of passes while a jet is still thinking about it) and yep, low cost. It also frees up assets like high performance jets to do what high performance jets are supposed to do instead of CAS. Small turboprops like the A-29 are also difficult to shoot down.
