So do The Greens.

@ Australia is the only country paying for it. As the smallest partner, we are also the one that will feel the most pressure. Qui bono?
5
Agree with all of those points.

@ If you bother to read some history, you will see that arms races only create tensions with neighbouring states, which usually leads to the same thing on the other side. If you take the trouble to look at some historical examples, it's pretty easy to see that the arms race between Britain and Germany massively increased tensions between the two countries and was a major contributor to WWI. The Cold War almost became a hot war on a couple of occasions and led to both sides believing that the other was likely to attack them. As Clausewitz said, war is policy by different means so the links between the two - politics and war - are unmistakable.
3
@ Oh, I will. Put the coalition last and Labor second last.
3
@ Yes to both but who are we protecting our ships against? This was the point of that Utopia sketch a few years ago.
2
@ Exactly.

Since the alternative is to stay in bed with the United States, it’s hardly treachery to want a better deal for one’s country. AUKUS is a terrible idea that not only surrenders Australian sovereignty to the United States, it also makes us markedly less safe. Our interests would have been far better served in an alliance with France. So if anyone is guilty of anything here, it’s those who prostrated us before the Americans in the first place. That means both the major parties. Using highly emotional language like ‘traitors’ is not in anyone’s best interests, unless you view politics as a sport and only care about which team wins.
2
Just wait. Public opinion is shifting and Albo with shift with it.
2
@ By getting out of AUKUS.
2
@ I don’t decode. Either write in coherent sentences or save your efforts. I have no further use for you.
2
@dannyhunn8752 I don’t think we would be accepted. We are too heavily invested in the United States. Secondly, I’m not sure I want to get into bed with Russia. China, Brazil and a couple of others are okay though. I think we definitely need to talk to them and see what we can work out.
1
@FarnsworthBiggen How?
1
@josemadrid2913 For whom?
1
@sonjakozman1699 Not necessarily. We would have to pursue other partnerships anyway but in the coming 12 months, the United States is going to become a millstone we don’t need or want.
1
@sonjakozman1699 Which is why the French deal was better for us.
1
@ This is wrong headed. Increasing the size of the ADF is more likely to piss people off than encourage them to join us. An arms race is actually a form of warfare itself, if we are to take Clausewitz and extend it a bit. We are a tiny country that punches above or weight. We’re not big enough to be a regional tough guy. Right now we need to figure out what our potential sources of conflict might be and whoever else might be involved.
1
@ Try reading Clausewitz sometime. Arms races are a form of aggression which makes war more likely, not less.
1
@ The second amendment did nothing to stop the rise of fascism in the United States. If anything, it contributed to it.
1
@LeonCutajar The second amendment did nothing to stop the ruse of fascism and the impending end of democracy in the United States. If anything it was the other way around. Most of the gun groups aligned themselves with Trump. A more engaged citizenry could almost educate itself.
1
@sonjakozman1699 What do you base that on Sonja? An arms race is invariably peaceful hostility and usually leads to an outbreak of war.
1
@ The second amendment did nothing to prevent the rise of fascism, the denial of rights and the likely impending doom of democracy in the United States. If anything, the gun groups helped make it happen. An educated citizenry, I'm all for. However, I think it would be better if people just engaged with the system a bit more. We are already living in a captured state.
1
@sonjakozman1699 Pauline doesn't even know what a pump jet is. But tell me this: why do we need protection from our largest trading partner? I agree with all the other stuff about persecuting journalists. The government has weaponised the courts to shut down people like MWM. Fortunately, it's resulted in people like Michael Pascoe and Rex Patrick joining him!
1
@ Sorry, I thought they were referring to someone else.
1
@FairladyS130 The Greens have it as a key policy to dump AUKUS. You’re also overlooking the fact that whatever has been said about Labor and The Greens colluding, they actually hate each other. So any potential partnership between the two is going to be through gritted teeth and only because there is no way they’re going to get into bed with Dutto.
1
@martee888 But we are not even doing it ourselves.
1
@Robert-xs2mv For what purpose? We don’t need nuclear power and there’s no scenario that would be resolved with nuclear weapons. Incidentally, in spite of what is commonly believed, having nuclear power stations doesn’t give us anything in relation to nuclear weapons. The two things are basically unrelated.
1
@ Ignorant of what, Robert?
1
@ Citizens Party?
1
@Robert-xs2mv Sounds like you don’t even have a reason, other than an emotional one. Good thing you’re not in charge of a nuclear weapons industry. You’re not a good advertisement for it.
1
@Robert-xs2mv I know enough to know that you were afraid to give any reason before turning to personal attacks. That’s not a good sign, Robert. I gave you the opportunity to respond and justify your opinion and you fell at the first hurdle.
1
@ You would have come out of this looking a lot more credible if you had chosen to give people a clue as to why you think the way you do. Instead you chose to run away.🧐 You said we needed to become a nuclear nation, both economically and militarily. You never said why. Not even a hint.
1
@Raygaz-y4z The Collins subs were very successful. They didn’t start well, with noisy bearings and an out-of-date combat system the Americans sold us. That’s the price of rolling your own. Once those problems were solved they would go on to prove very effective.
1
@RodWilliams-m7r What’s your alternative?
1
@RodWilliams-m7r No it doesn’t. We are a sovereign nation which, in the last few years, has surrendered our sovereignty to the United States when other arrangements would have been cheap and more equitable.
1
@ Alliances come and go. Any student of history can tell you that. In the early 20th Century, France and Britain switched from being rivals and occasionally enemies to allies. Does that mean they were no longer sovereign nations? Incidentally, being a part of the British empire was alway a reality for us and in many ways was beneficial. It was only during WWII that we switched some of our allegiance to the United States. That is a reality for a small country. Those were choices we made when we needed to. The alliance we formed with the United States was principally to defeat the Japanese and was actually far from one-sided, even though the Pacific theatre was ultimately under American command. But if you read Eric Bergerud, a good quality American historian, you’ll find that they needed us about as much as we needed them.
1
Don’t worry. It will change when the critical mass of public opinion shifts.
1
@carolynreid2108 For example?
1
@OzzyBoganTech Even a bot would do a better job than that! Didn’t understand a word of it. LOL!!
1
@OzzyBoganTech There was nothing simple about that sentence.
1
@ I might too if he made an effort to be understood.
1
@andyburton7205 He’ll do what Gina, Rupert and Anthony Pratt tell him to do.
1
@FarnsworthBiggen Doesn’t mean they couldn’t have worked out a deal but the Donald wasn’t having a bar of it.
1
@Cranky_Crone Wasn’t there a situation the other day when he clearly hadn’t heard of it?
1
@ He’ll only claim that we were bad customers ripping America off. And since that’s the way he sees us, we don’t want to disappoint him, do we?😁
1
What is wokeness?
