With so many people having solar panels on their rooves, the amount of energy they generate now exceeds what the grid can accommodate. Power generation is not our problem. Storage is. Nuclear is a waste of time, effort and money. They will tell you that it’s the only way to do base load generation but that will all be out of date once the storage problem is solved. And remember, renewables are by far the cheapest option. You could replace the renewables generation system three times over the expected 60 year life of a nuclear reactor and still have plenty of change.

Why have the Liberals always had such a stiffy for nyookular?

Gina wants it.

@allanm250 Wasn’t this the party for individual freedom?
2
@adam8628 It’s old. Been known for a decade.
2
@salpon Do you speak for most Australians, do you? The good old silent majority. Where have I heard that before?
2
@ Exactly. Five years ago it was 250W panels. Now it’s 400W. Power density is increasing all the time.

@ Mmmm… okay. I know there have been improvements in efficiency - they’re up to around 22% now, compared to about half that 20 years ago - but I wasn’t aware of that.

@ China? Sure, why not? They are already our largest trading partner. A huge percentage of the lithium batteries in this country were made there and there are probably billions of them. We have some of the largest lithium reserves in the world. It’s not like we don’t get anything out of it. Besides, there are other sources of battery manufacturing in the world and both parties know it.
1
@jamestanner9198 They’re not going to do that. Anyway, there are other manufacturers.
1
@ Nope because they need us for their own supply.
1
@ Lithium. Gas. Iron ore. Bauxite.

@salpon Can’t I? Looks like I just did.

@ Really? What do you base your claim on? Yeah, watch the slight of hand in the next election campaign. It’ll be about Dutto’s nuclear vision and keeping brown people and gays under the boot. Actually, very few people want nuclear because most know now that it’s too expensive. Then there are those who don’t want it in their backyard. The problem with Dutto’s nuclear wet dream is that: 1) It’s too expensive and renewables can do the job a lot cheaper, 2) The type of reactor they’re flogging has never been built before and 3) The average construction time on something like this is about 20 years. But Dutto wants to commit another $330 Bn of our money to a project we’ll never need and won’t be available for at least 20 years. Dutto’s not doing this because it’s the best choice. He’s doing it to gaslight the Greens. This is the party that’s supposed to be better at managing money, yet they also committed $368 Bn to a nuclear submarine program that is no use to us. What is this attraction that the right has to nyookular power? It’s out of date. It’s too expensive and the money can be used for things we need. This is the party that’s for privatisation yet there’s no way a private company is going to do this.

@y0uCantHandle Who’d buy a used nuclear reactor (other than bitcoin miners)?😁 Really, this is about Gina.
1
@y0uCantHandle Especially when people have the opportunity to generate energy themselves. This is still a growing market. The biggest problem is storage. Eventually it will be possible for a lot of people to go off grid entirely.
1
@salpon We can't afford it. We can't afford Dutto either. They've already committed us to a nuclear submarine program we don't need and can't afford and now they want to commit a similar amount off money on a white elephant. Trillion dollar debts, here we come! This is supposed to be the party of superior economic managers! LOL!!
