  1. The problem was that the Australian aircraft industry was very small and lead times were long. Unlike Britain or the United States, it simply could not respond quickly enough to demands and the variety of engine options was simply not there. While we successfully built aircraft like the Wirraway, the Boomerang, the Beaufort, the Beaufighter and the Mosquito, we were still very reliant on supplies from our allies. While Australia was not short of talent in any department - show me a contemporary aircraft with remotely controlled barbettes - realising these ideas was by far the greatest challenge.
