Auklin The CDC was quoting an old study by Klerk and Gertz from the 1990s which was a random telephone survey of 5,000 respondents that asked one question: “Have you ever used a gun to prevent a crime.” It was debunked by Cook and Ludwig in a similar survey which had mechanisms it it to eliminate false positives. They came to the conclusion that that maximum number was of the order of 110,000. Even Gary Klerk, who did the original survey no longer quotes it, admitting that between 35 and 65 percent of these incidents were probably illegal.
Now let’s look at some other CDC figures. In 2010 there were 16,256 murders in the United States, with 11,078 by gun. That same year there were 617 justified homicides, 259 by civilians and the rest by police. Of those 259, there were 200 done with guns. That means that for every justified homicide with a gun, there were 55 gun murders. How would you like to explain that?
This is a debate America is incapable of having. The binary nature of politics in the United States is now so entrenched that most people are only able to see this in terms of all guns or no guns. The reality is that only a small percentage of gun control advocates believe that guns could or should be totally eliminated. Anyone who tells you otherwise is selling something. Sensible gun laws have been successfully implemented all over the world without those countries turning to anarchy or totalitarianism. Grow up America.
