He was referring to a specific upper stage, not Raptor per se. 🤦‍♂️

His on on the Chernobyl reactor was pretty full on.

That depends on too many things to make such a simple assumption.

Jean-Jacques Nantel Except the cost always varies with the mission. Not to mention the fact that there will be a point where the rocket cannot be reused and becomes an expendable. Once that point is reached, SpaceX suddenly has to compete against highly mature expendable systems whose cost/performance is much better. So yes, as long as the payload is small enough and the orbit not too high, SpaceX will be very competitive but once outside that range it won’t be. It was really designed to be used with the ISS.

Jean-Jacques Nantel You don’t listen do you. That’s one mission. It has a very clearly defined set of parameters. It doesn’t suddenly mean “SpaceX make the best rockets”. Surely you saw the chart that shows how once you pass a certain point there are better options, depending on the mission. How, after having it explained to you by Scott Manley and reiterated in more general terms by me, do you still not understand this?

Jean-Jacques Nantel ”SpaceX IS cheaper” Sigh This will be my last post on this because you’re ignoring everything that has been put before you. In certain sectors of the market SpaceX will be cheaper. That market is primarily the LEO and ISS launch market. I expect it to do very well there. In all other sectors of the market, especially those where reusability is not a factor, it will have to compete on very different terms. It will have to go up against rockets with better payload to orbit performance and better engine efficiency in a vacuum. SpaceX will not necessarily be cheaper in those markets and may even be uncompetitive. The people who do this stuff for a living can see through publicity stunts. Give them a bit of credit for knowing their jobs.

Jean-Jacques Nantel So launching a car into space isn’t a publicity stunt... right... Mate, you don’t know anything about this. Stick to poutine recipes or something.

That's not a good model for man rated rockets though...

Best is as best does. Scott showed plenty of plots - and they were by no means complete - which show quite clearly that there are absolute answers her. There is just the best one with the fewest trade-offs and that will vary from mission to mission.

No other rocket will come close for what? See, if you actually listen to what he's saying, there are far too many variables to just make blanket statements like that. Look at the charts. Even ignoring the fact that this is for Merlin engines, surely it's dawned on you that there is a multitude of launch options and what the client choses will depend on the payload they're launching vs the altitude they want it launched to. Raptor doesn't do anything that couldn't have been done before. The only difference in this case is that it is designed to be re-usable.

capohd28 Well, Scott Manley’s charts suggest there is no absolute answer to the problem. I think you need to take a backward step and see the bigger picture.
